about

Jura is an island in Scotland that I lived on for a week in 2004. It was a singing holiday with people I grew very close to over a short intense time. On the final night, with the campfire abandoned by all but me, and the sky still pale with the last traces of a six hour sunset, I climbed the cliff back towards our mansion, but stopped at the top with my recorder and played an improvised farewell.

The semi-quaver/dotted quaver rhythm so typical of Scottish melody is used here to locate the sentiment geographically. Its elaboration into a trio was done in late 2011 in preparation for inclusion in a solo album of folk songs entitled Celtic Eclectica. My favourite bit is during the final iteration of the tune in the B section when all the instruments reach a climax of nostalgic emotion.
